Module 5: Grin it, Win it!
Great Dental Health Means Heart Health
Shape Up US is Introducing
The Hip Hop Healthy Heart Program for Children™
One Module At-A-Time.

Why is a Dental Health Module in a Curriculum about Heart Health? Because the Hip Hop Healthy Heart Program for Children™ is a holistic approach to teaching heart health through total physical fitness. That includes learning to maintain a healthy mouth as early as possible. Recent research shows a connection between dental disorders such as periodontal disease (disease of the gums and bones that support the teeth) and gum disease (also called gingivitis) and heart attacks1. The common strain of bacteria in dental plaque causes blood clots, which can induce a heart attack when they are released into the blood stream. These findings are the first to link bacteria to the formation of potentially fatal blood clots. In studies, they have found that heart disease is twice as high in people with periodontal disease2.
